Rubber composition for tires and pneumatic tire
United States Patent 11597822 B2 · Filed: 04/13/2018 · Published: 03/07/2023

Assignee:

SUMITOMO RUBBER INDUSTRIES, LTD. (Kobe, JP)

Inventors:

Kitaura, Takehiro (Kobe, JP)
Toya, Subaru (Kobe, JP)
Yoshiyasu, Hayato (Kobe, JP)
Yamada, Hiroaki (Kobe, JP)

This patent claims a typical tire rubber composition but with improved abrasion resistance due to the employ of tetrazines.  The thinking is that the tetrazines interact with the rubber to increase abrasion resistance.  Tetrazines are cyclic groups with 4 nitrogens per ring and 3 conjugated double bonds.  This chemistry creates Diels-Alder reactions.  The inventors also point out the benefits of terpene and DCPD resins in these compositions.  Very interesting.

Packaging adhesives comprising low volatile tackifier compositions
United States Patent 11613675 B2 · Filed: 01/29/2020 · Published: 03/28/2023

Assignee:

Synthomer Adhesive Technologies LLC (Beachwood, OH, US)

Inventors:

Yuan, Bing (Methuen, MA, US)
Dickerson, James Palmer (Kingsport, TN, US)
Liew, Bee Kim (Kingsport, TN, US)
Osborne, Christopher Wayne (Johnson City, TN, US)
Siera, Jacobus (Hoogerheide, NL)

In one embodiment of the invention, a tackifier composition comprising at least one thermoplastic hydrocarbon resin and an antioxidant composition; wherein a portion of the volatile organic compounds in the thermoplastic hydrocarbon resin has been removed; wherein the antioxidant composition comprises at least one primary antioxidant and at least one secondary antioxidant; and wherein the levels of individual volatile organic compounds monitored of in the tackifier composition are less than about 0.5 ppm as measured by GC/MS headspace analysis as described in this disclosure.

The novelty of this invention is the Less Than 0.5 ppm Volatiles in the resin.  This is similar achievement-wise to the technology that resulted in terpene-phenolics with <100 ppm volatiles including free phenol.

RUBBER COMPOSITION AND TIRE
European Patent Application EP4141062 A1 · Filed: 08/23/2022 · Published: 03/01/2023

Assignee:

GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER (Akron, OH 44316, US)

Inventors:

DELVILLE JEROME JOEL DANIEL (FR)
KANZ CARLO (LU)
STEINER PASCAL PATRICK (LU)
MILAN MARIE-LAURE STÉPHANIE (LU)

If you read this patent application carefully, you will see several key claims.  There is improvement in all three of the properties of the magic triangle of tires.  The preferred resin is a high softening alpha-pinene resin (terpene-phenolics are not preferred and hydrocarbon resins cannot provide the performance of alpha-pinene resins).  The rubber-resin compositions can be loaded with silica, up to 190 phr and have good wet grip and still have good rolling resistance.  A closer look at this application reveals some interesting physics and physical chemistry.

GUM BASES FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES
European Patent EP3316698 B1 · Filed: 06/30/2016 · Published: 03/15/2023

Assignee:

WRIGLEY W M JUN CO (Chicago, IL 60642, US)

Inventors:

PHILLIPS DAVID R (US)
MORGRET LES D (US)

A gum base which, when formulated into a chewing gum, provides a gum base composition made with synthetic elastomers and elastomers plasticizers obtained from “green” or renewable and sustainable resources.

This is a very good discussion on chewing gum /gum base technology.

Process for a continuous reaction with feedstocks derived from Bio-Renewable resources
United States Patent 11608450 B2 · Filed: 08/01/2020 · Published: 03/21/2023

Miller, Jerrold H. (Savannah, GA, US)
Sullivan, David H. (Savannah, GA, US)

This patent discloses basic continuous processes to manufacture resin products, especially high viscosity materials that are common to the pine chemicals industry using continuous reaction technology.  Several variants of the simple CSTR are presented that illustrate the breadth of this technology.  I highly recommend taking the time to read this patent.
